28 weeks

{january 22}
a bump update:
this could have possibly been the 75th picture taken of me in attempt to document the growing bump.
the previous ones were discarded due to polygamist looking hair, bad lighting, poor iphone quality, and let's be honest.. pale white skin and an extra 10 lbs doesn't do anyone any favors.
so it is what it is...

well today started bright and early at 6:25 after cal had been calling out, 'maamaa... dadaa!' for a while.
we went downstairs where he drank his bottle while we cuddled on the couch.
i fell back to sleep and cal watched pbs.
as some point, cal woke me up asking to play basketball.
i set up his hoop, and started making josh's lunch for the day.
c asked for cereal.. we ate and i followed my cheerios with this lovely concoction:
family scriptures and prayer...
'buh bye daadaa' and i love yous...
rush to get ready and out the door.

sarah was fantastic and watched cal.
i tried not to barf as i drove to my appointment.
i managed to not pass out during the blood draw.
bp 110/55. weight 128. belly at 28 cm.
as of right now baby boy is breech with his bum down and head and feet up.

i went in with lots of questions about the delivery..
and got a lot of vague - every delivery is different / it's really hard to know answers.

i'm already getting so anxious about d-day.
i've always been the kind of person who reads the end of a book first.
i just like knowing what to expect. and that really is impossible when it comes to delivering a baby.

anyways.. i just need to chill out.

other happenings of the day:
lunch with chelsea!
cal throwing a tub of sour cream out of my grocery cart and it splattering everywhere.
homemade hawaiian pizza.
and my first pack meeting as an official scout leader:

not really the most proper way to wear the uniform, but at least i tried.

25 weeks

well, tomorrow i will be 25 weeks.
i have had the hardest time getting around to documenting this growing belly.

i knew the holidays were going to make time fly, and it feels like our 20 week ultrasound was only a few days ago.

i remember thinking that when calvin starts going to nursery on sundays, i will only have a few months of baby freedom to enjoy the lessons..
well, c goes into nursery next week and in 3 months this little man will be here - hopefully snoozing through relief society, so i can continue to enjoy my sundays.
(p.s. i was released from nursery and am now a cub scout den leader)

i had my 24 week apt the day after christmas.
everything looked great.
he was kicking around while my midwife was finding his heartbeat.
155 bpm.
we went over the ultrasound notes and she confirmed that everything's perfect.
i weighed in at 124 lbs - up 6 lbs from pre-pregnancy.
blood pressure 104/60
baby bump was right at 24 cm.
they sent me home with a lovely bottle of orange snow cone syrup to drink before my next visit. barf.

as d-day gets closer, i have a lot more questions than i ever did with calvin,
but i drew a blank when she asked me if i had any questions.

i went into c's delivery very open minded, and while it was a good experience, i think i learned a lot about what i don't want to happen this time around (TMI warning):
 - getting pumped full of iv fluids that i was so swollen and achy for days
(also, making me look like a marshmallow woman for all those 'first' pictures)
- not knowing breathing techniques or pressure points to help with pain
- an epidural that worked too well - i could not feel a thing, making pushing difficult
- pushing within minutes of 'becoming a 10' (i want to be able to rest and descend more)
 - pushing to the point of exhaustion (2.5 + hours) that i couldn't enjoy my brand new baby
- tearing + episiotomy + more tearing

anyways, i need to bring these up before too long, and hopefully find better alternatives.

i am pretty positive i will get an epidural again with this delivery, just to see how much 'easier' this delivery goes.
supposedly, each one gets faster, and somewhat easier.
with that in mind.. i am aiming for a natural birth for baby tres.. whenever that is.

19/20 week belly & ultrasound

well, i have kind of fallen off of the whole baby dos update wagon.

here are some recent thoughts:
- hello belly! looking at pictures of myself, makes me feel a little dramatic - but i swear my belly is huge.
maybe it's because my daily view is this:
last pregnancy, sharsti and i would always joke about how our bodies were turning into the grinch's:
ha, i can't help but make a grinch face and chuckle when i slather on noni butter each night...

- i was getting super anxious for our anatomy scan.
a friend of mine recently lost her baby, and i hadn't felt baby dos as much as i remember feeling c at this point.
i was worried there was something wrong.
would this baby have heart issues too? is it really a boy?
well, the morning finally came (turning 20 weeks over thanksgiving meant we had to wait until after the break for our appointment).
wednesday, november 28 (ali's 22 bday).
i dropped cal off at kimmy's and met josh at valley's provo office.
it felt like we waited forever to be called back.
our ultrasound lady was fantastic!
she was great about explaining everything she was doing, and what we were seeing.
he is definitely a boy (wahoo!),
and everything looked 100% perfect.
he measured exactly on track except for his head was a little small.
the tech had been an neonatal echo person (??) before working there, so she did a really in-depth exam of his heart and it looked great.
also, the placenta is running along the front of my stomach - which is why i haven't felt him as much as i did with cal.
anyways, she took lots of pictures and we went away floating and very much in love.

- he has become much more real since then, and we are so so excited. josh has felt him kick a few times, and we are still thinking his name is porter. yay? nay?
love this site
- since c and p will be close to the same seasons/sizes, i haven't felt a need to buy anything.
so, i am going to sew a quilt -
maybe this one:
via
or this one (in more boyish colors):
via
or both.
and there are a few things i need to look into and get:
 double stroller (suggestions?)
diaper genie (two in diapers = too many trips outside to the trash can - go ahead, call me lazy)
video monitor (mostly for when we move c into a toddler bed and p into the crib)

well, my eyelids are heavy, and baby p is kicking which means it must be time for bed.
hopefully, it won't be long until the next update.

halloween,16 weeks, and gender...

last night cal went trick or treating for the first time.
he, jackson, and grandma dressed up and we went out to a few houses in grandma's neighborhood.
c was a little scared at first, but he caught on quick... and he was definitely excited about the candy.
we ate a yummy dinner and spent time with family while passing out treats.

earlier that day...
i actually had time to get ready for the day and document my growing bump...
and then
at 1:00 we met up with josh and headed to the doctor's office to have an early ultrasound.
this pregnancy has been a bit surreal to us for a few reasons,
so it was a little weird to actually see a baby inside me.
at the same time, it felt so perfect, and exciting, and right.
i could have laid there all day watching the little one move around on that black and white screen - little hands opening and closing, and arm's swinging around.
the baby was sitting indian style at first making it hard to see the gender, but it was cute to see those little ankles crossed and feet so comfy.
when the tech finally got a view of the parts.. i didn't see much there..
i asked if it was a girl, and she said she wasn't sure yet.. that she felt like she saw both at different points.. that the baby's cord was also obscuring the view..
she readjusted the angle, and turned on something that showed what was the cord, and what wasn't..
she pointed to something and called it outdoor plumbing..
it's another BOY.
whew... i have really been hoping he was a boy..
it will be so fun for the boys to be so close in age,
they can share a room (aka, we get to still have a guest room),
we already have all the boy clothes, boy decor, boy toys.. etc.

anyways, i did a really good job of keeping it a secret for a whole 4 hours, until cal opened this 'dino' egg at the halloween party:
it had a little dinosaur inside with blue confetti.
we have our official anatomy scan the week after thanksgiving.
let's hope this first tech told us the right thing..

14 weeks and it's out.

well, it's out.
after being asked today at church, i caved and decided to go public.. ha
so, no.. i have not put on holiday weight early..
and, yes there is a 3.8 inch baby in there who has recently started smiling, and growing hair on his or her little head.

it is still a little surreal to me,
and i don't think i will be 100% convinced until i get to see baby dos (spanglish nickname)  in an ultrasound.
so while the belly keeps growing, and the baby isn't kicking me all night long,
i will continue to love on my sweet little cal, and call him my baby.

i have recently found myself extremely baby hungry..
which is a good thing!
but you have to admit, there's nothing like snuggling your sleeping newborn,
knowing that you created them, and loving them more than you'd ever imagine.

182 days left!

(also, i have been blogging along the way, but only saving them as drafts. they are all posted now, and you can see them by clicking on the labels below)

11 weeks

i've always heard that people show sooner with second pregnancies, and so on...
and i always thought it was one of those old wives tales.
but lately, my normal jeans are needing some extra room..
and today i looked in the mirror to see this:
after doing a little bit of research.. i found out that it is a true tale.
so welcome tiny lime baby bump.
...
in the 2.5 minutes it took me to take the above belly photo, mr. calvin single-handedly flooded our bathroom with an empty bottle and our tub facet.
(did i mention how he held my phone under this tub's running water a few days before.)
busted:
he was not happy i took his bottle away.. and he looks slightly like an orphan in this picture:
i promise, i take care of him.
and check out those huge molars. he is a chewing monster.
...
i never posted about my 8 week appointment.
to make a long story short.. the midwife i saw is very conservative -
and i had a few issues with her during cal's pregnancy (she was stressed out about some labs - that were actually processed wrong and were really not an issue... possible tiny sch... blah blah blah. wanted me to switch the the mfm specialists... i chose not to, and at my next appointment she told me everything was perfect.)
anyways, she wanted me to go in for an early ultrasound because she couldn't find the heart beat on the ancient us machine that she really wasn't supposed to be using..  and most of the time you cant hear a heartbeat that early.
after some thought, i decided not to go in for the ultrasound.
if for some reason there really wasn't a heartbeat, my body will figure it out and i will miscarry.
i have still been feeling sick - throwing up most days more than once..
my belly is obviously growing, and i will go in next week.
i feel good with my decision, and hopefully she won't be mad at me for disobeying.

c's birth story

today, july 15th, was calvin's due date. i am more than happy that i have him here in my arms instead of my belly right now.

i don't know where to begin, except for saying that this little boy has truly changed our lives. it is not just the multiple mid-night feedings, the garbages full of diapers, or the extra loads of laundry...
it's more than falling asleep to baby squeaks or walking around with spit up on my pajamas till way past noon...
it has more to do with the amazing spirit this little one has brought with him. he truly is a piece of heaven.  a gift from God.
i never knew i could love somebody this much.
i feel like i have found my true purpose in life - to love and care for this little guy.
i love being a mother.
i love how calvin knows me, and is soothed by my voice.
i love my sweet husband.
he is so good with calvin, and so kind to me.
i am so grateful that we can be an eternal family.
...
now the story:
on friday july 1st, we headed up to escala in park city to spend the weekend with josh's family. at this point, nothing had changed since my last midwife's appointment where we had the discussion about going past my due date. i had decided to not worry about it and enjoy the trip - spending time with family, and swimming in the pool.

saturday july 2nd - spent the day at a little league baseball game, swimming - well more like floating in the pool, and walking around the outlets. we had a yummy mexican dinner. no contractions. no baby.

sunday july 3rd - we slept in, and around lunch time went on a drive and found a little trail that led down to the river. we got out and walked around. i started having contractions, but mostly when we were walking lots, or going up hills. around dinner time, the contractions started becoming more noticeable. they weren't super strong, or painful, but mostly uncomfortable in my back. they seemed to tame down when i would sit. we were sitting and eating dinner when j's sister asked if i had been having any contractions. i told her yes, actually i have had three since we sat down. we decided to start timing them. they weren't regular at all. to try and progress things, j and i went out walking. we took a few belly pictures, hoping they would be the last.walking definitely sped up the contractions.
at 9:30, i decided to call the midwives. i was so excited when my favorite one answered and said she was on call for the weekend. she told me to go to bed, and try and get as much rest as i could. if i was really in labor, i'd progress to the point of not being able to sleep through the contractions - at that point i should head back to orem. she told me to not worry about timing them, but to just try and sleep as much as i could. j and i packed up our stuff just in case. we watched the fireworks off of the balcony and went to bed.
note: this day was fast sunday. j's thoughtful parents had fasted that day, that the baby would come before he got too big. j's mom was worried that if he got any bigger, my small body wouldn't be able to handle it...

monday july 4th, 2011: i woke up at 1:30 and needed to use the restroom. when i returned to bed, i could not get back to sleep. the room we were staying in was really hot, i hated the pillows, and really just wanted to be in my own bed. i was still having contractions, but they didn't hurt too bad. because i couldn't get comfortable i decided to time a few of the contractions. they varied from 4 minutes apart to 21. i tried to go back to sleep, but ended up tossing and turning. at 3:30, i woke josh up and asked him to take me home. i just wanted to sleep in our bed. he was quick to get up and we headed home.

at this point, i really didn't think i was in labor, labor... possibly early labor, but not the kind that would make the baby come on the fourth of july. (since, we found out we were pregnant, i said he can come any day in july but the 4th or the 24th. i didn't want him to have to share his birthday with a holiday... even though the 4th of july is my favorite holiday)

the drive home was perfect. j and i were a little giddy thinking about having the baby. j was driving extra carefully, as i timed my contractions on his phone. the drive took a little over an hour and the whole way down my contractions were 4 minutes apart, lasting 45 seconds or longer. also, i definitely said that the contractions weren't bad, and that 'i could totally handle this'... haha.

pulling into the neighborhood around 4:50 am, i told josh that we will go back to bed and if the contractions don't stop we will go into the hospital around 7 to allow the nurses to get through shift change. well, a few seconds after i got out of the car, i felt a little gush. i knew immediately that my water had broken a little bit. i also knew, that this meant i needed to go in sooner than later.

we changed our clothes and repacked our bags, j shaved his face, i grabbed the diaper bag, and we headed over to the hospital. they brought us to a room (112) and i changed into a gown. the nurse hooked me up to the monitors and confirmed that my water bag was leaking - this meant i was being admitted, and had 24 hours to deliver the baby. i was settled into my bed at 5:50 am (right at shift change), iv went in, and they checked me. i was only 1 cm but 100% effaced. this baby was going to be born on the fourth of july, whether i liked it or not...
while the nurses were doing report, my contractions were getting stronger, but were still tolerable. the new nurses came in to introduce themselves (one was orienting, so there were 2) and mentioned that i was the only patient laboring at the moment, so if i wanted an epidural, i needed to give them an hour notice to get the anesthesiologist out of bed, and to the hospital. i told them that i was okay, and would let them know. within minutes of them leaving, at the peak of a contraction, my water really broke. it was like someone dumped a bucket of water in my lap. at first it relieved a lot of the pressure, but then my contractions got really bad. they were every two minutes, lasting sixty seconds long.

at this point, i was doing all i could to relax, but i couldn't handle the pain. i remember saying things like, 'i am never doing this again', and 'i can't do this'. needless to say, i had them call the anesthesiologist. i wanted that epidural. i remember thinking, 'why did i wait? he won't get here for an hour! that's 30 more contractions!' yikes, i was not prepared for the pain. josh was really sweet and comforting, through the whole thing...

not too much later, the nurses were in prepping me for the epidural. filling me up with fluids, changing my linens. they said he was almost there and would be here any minute! going into labor the two things i was most afraid of were the epidural and the pushing. i had seen way too many epidurals placed and heard way too many stories of them not working. i started getting really nervous and got the shakes way bad. i could not stop my legs from quivering. the nurse said that most moms don't get the shakes until they were in transition, so she checked me around seven and i was at a 2.

ben, the anesthesiologist, came to do my epidural. i sat on the edge of the bed and leaned on josh. it was not easy trying to squish myself over my belly, and hold perfectly still through contractions. he tried to do the epidural, but could not find the right spot. i kept feeling shocks down one side or the other and he told me to tell him which side i felt it on. 'right!' 'ow, ow, left!' haha i can laugh now, but it was not fun in the moment. again, josh was a rock star. he was watching the procedure as he held me. he has said many times since, that he would never let anyone do that to him! ben, aborted that first try and came around and showed me the position he wanted me in. again, bending over the belly = no bueno. but, he got it really quickly that time.

unfortunately, i started going into shock, and my blood pressure was dropping below 70/40.. the room was spinning, and i felt like i was going to vomit. they threw some oxygen on me, started another fluid bolus, and josh held me up while ben finished taping up the epidural line. they laid me down and put my head down but my pressure was getting worse. then ben shot some ephedrine in my iv.. and i remember that burning bad. it worked though, and my blood pressure stabilized.

around 7:30, i was as happy as can be. the epidural was feeling great. i was comfortable enough to rest a little. i chewed on ice chips, and visited with josh and my mom. my midwife was on her way, and had asked the nurses to start me on pitocin to augment my labor a little bit. (with the 24 hour deadline, and my mom's history of never progressing and having to have 4 c-sections, made everyone a little nervous. they wanted to get my labor going.)

baby c did not like the pitocin and his heart rate kept dropping, so they decided to stop it. my midwife, jennie, got there just before 8:00 and checked me. i was 3 cm now...we rested and at 10 i was only 4 cm. they put in an intrauterine pressure catheter, to better monitor the strength of my contractions. it showed that i was having contractions but they weren't extremely strong. jennie wanted to try pitocin again but on the lowest setting. again, cal's heart rate dropped and the pitocin was stopped, but luckily my contractions started getting stronger on their own.

11:00 - they decided to not check me because of the slow progression.

12:00 - jennie checked me and started to laugh. she said i was at a ten, and ready to push. we thought she was joking, but she wasn't. she left to change her clothes and they prepped the room for the delivery!

12:15 - started pushing. we had a scary moment when calvin dropped farther into the birth canal - his heart rate disappeared. they were moving the monitor all over my belly but couldn't find it. the nurse rushed off to get a probe that goes onto the baby's head for better monitoring. they got it hooked up, and still no heart rate. i was trying not to panic, but focus on taking deep breathes, and started praying like crazy... the nurse left again to get a different cord, and jennie tried the external monitor again, and finally found his little beating heart. the nurse returned and hooked up the new cord and it too showed a good, strong heart beat. whew!

well i pushed and pushed, and pushed. after an hour i was exhausted, and there was only a tiny part of his head showing. they brought in a mirror so i could see what was going on... jennie thought it would be motivation for me to push harder, but really it sort of discouraged me, when i saw how little movement i had after so long.. everyone did a great job at encouraging me, and helping me relax. in between pushes, i laid on my side and tried to rest..

i pushed and pushed for another hour.. and there was still little movement. i was so drained by this time, i don't remember much, but my mom said i was getting frustrated and kept saying, just come out all ready! i do remember feeling really loopy and saying all sorts of stuff.. my nurse and the midwife took turns leaving to eat lunch.. and i just kept pushing. every two minutes for a minute.

finally around 2:30, he started coming out... and i started to tear, so jennie gave me a small episiotomy, and with the next push, out he came.. it wasn't like other births i've seen where the head comes out and chills there for a second while they suction his nose, and mouth, and then his body comes with the next push... calvin's little body followed right after his head.. and i ended up tearing past the episiotomy, to a third degree partial tear. ouch. when jennie told me about my tear, i started hitting my epidural button like crazy.

anyways, once he came out, they put him straight on my belly. i grabbed him and started rubbing him to get him to cry. it felt like it took forever for him to cry, but once he figured it out, he was a good little screamer. josh cut his cord and they took calvin over to the warming table. at one minute, he got an 8 on his APGAR, and he got a 9 on his five minute.
josh stayed right by calvin's side, while they weighed him, and did all the assessments. he weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20 inches long.
while all this was going on, i was getting stitched up.. then, it was my turn to hold him. i was barely able to hold him, i was so weak and shaky.
it was pretty surreal that he was finally here. it felt like just yesterday, we were watching him dance around at the first ultra sound... josh and i made this little guy. i had been carrying him around with me for nine months. it truly is a miraculous thing, and such an undeniable proof that there is a God in heaven, and that the plan of salvation is real.
calvin was very alert and content.. tough guy had been through a lot and he had a cone-head and swollen face to show for it, but no one cared. he was perfect. and we were instantly in love.
he loved his bath, and cleaned up real nice.. both mom and baby slept well that evening....

update!

a lot has been going on with our little family recently.
on may 7th, we celebrated our 2 year anniversary.

we had a great day. pretty laid back, nothing crazy.
we went to see the king's speech (pg-13 version)
we LOVED it. and highly recommend it.
we shared a yummy meal at cafe paesan.

secondly, i cut my hair! well, i didn't but my good friend colette did.
it is so much healthier, and perfect for the summer.
also, we have been getting ready for our big move into this cute place:
it may not look like much now,
but just wait till that dumpster is gone,
and our cars are parked there instead.
...
this has been quite the adventure.

we got to pick out the colors for everything..
which was really fun at first,
but then i started to stress about how it's going to look.
'is the paint too dark?'
'is the tile too yellow?'
'will our furniture match?'
at the same time, the more they finish, the more i fall in love.
it has been so fun watching everything come together.

this will be the back yard, once they put grass in.
we have a covered patio outside our back door where we want to put a bbq for dad,
and a kiddie pool for mom to tan, i mean baby c to play in next summer.
our closing date is may 26th - less than two weeks away.
we've got lots to do between now and then:
packing, cleaning, schooling, working, growing a babying etc.
but we are so excited and feel so blessed.
