baby veins

this is a butterfly needle.
it is much smaller than other needles used to draw blood.
today at school we were practicing blood draws.
i have tiny veins.
i was the only student they used a butterfly on.
my partner was a really good sport and did her best.
she still poked right through my brachial vein.
surprisingly, i was okay with it.
my partner on the other hand was sick to her stomach and on the verge of tears.
unfortunately, i think i scarred my classmate for life.
fortunately, no one else wanted to practice on me...
one poke is more than enough.
the joys of nursing school.

I am more familiar with butterfly needles than I would care to be... I have small, hard-to-find veins, and they have drawn blood from the tops of my hands, the insides of my knees, the tops of my feet... and on the whole, more misses than hits. It is kind of gross, I'm not going to lie... but in the end, it's all good.

We had to use these at the VA to draw from someone's finger. A tricky pt. indeed.
